Milford Transit Embraces Electric Buses
The Milford Transit District (MTD) is taking a significant step toward a cleaner, more sustainable future by incorporating electric buses into its fleet. This initiative aligns with Connecticut’s ambitious goal to transition its public transportation system to 100% battery-electric buses by 2035, as outlined in Executive Order No. 21-3.
A Green Milestone for Milford
Located at 259 Research Drive in Milford, the MTD serves the city and extends its services to Greater New Haven and Greater Bridgeport. As part of the state’s Battery Electric Bus (BEB) initiative, MTD is collaborating with the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) to pilot and expand the use of electric buses. This partnership includes the installation of charging infrastructure and necessary upgrades to support the new electric vehicles.
Benefits of Electric Buses
Electric buses offer numerous advantages over traditional diesel-powered buses:
- Environmental Impact: They produce zero tailpipe emissions, significantly reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
- Cost Efficiency: Electric buses have lower operating and maintenance costs due to fewer moving parts and reduced fuel expenses.
- Enhanced Rider Experience: They provide a quieter and smoother ride, contributing to a more comfortable journey for passengers.
Statewide Commitment to Clean Transit
The MTD’s transition to electric buses is part of a broader statewide effort. In 2024, Connecticut received a $38.9 million federal grant to purchase 46 battery-electric buses and install 29 chargers for the CTfastrak bus rapid transit service. This initiative is supported by more than $17 million in matching state funds and $30 million from federal formula funds.
Looking Ahead
As the MTD integrates electric buses into its operations, it not only contributes to a cleaner environment but also sets a precedent for other transit agencies in Connecticut. The ongoing collaboration between local transit districts, CTDOT, and federal partners underscores a collective commitment to sustainable transportation solutions.
For residents and commuters in Milford, this transition promises a future of greener, more efficient public transportation options.
